How to Play Speakka
Speakka is a free word game that helps you learn vocabulary by catching it, not cramming it. Words fall from the top of the screen, and your job is to match each one before it lands. It takes a few seconds to learn and gives you a reason to recall a word under just enough pressure to make it stick. Here's everything you need to know to start playing.
The basic idea
A word drops down one of the columns on the board. You slide it left or right and drop it onto its matching partner — the translation, the synonym, or the next form of a verb, depending on the mode. Make the match and both cards blow off the board with a satisfying pop, along with the word's meaning. Miss, and the cards stack up; let a column overflow and you lose a life.
The three game modes
Single Word Match (vocabulary) pairs an English word with its translation in the language you're learning — the core mode, with thousands of words across dozens of topics. Synonym Match pairs English words with their synonyms to grow your range. Irregular Verbs drills the base, past simple and past participle forms of English's trickiest verbs. Same falling mechanic, three different things to learn.
Matches, chains and combos
Matches work both vertically and horizontally, so a single drop can set off a chain reaction that clears several pairs at once — worth big bonus points. String matches together without a mistake and your combo multiplier climbs, so the more fluently you play, the faster your score grows.
Hearts, scoring and levels
You start with three hearts. Overflow a column and you lose one; lose all three and it's game over — but you can keep going. Points come from matches, order bonuses and combos, and clearing a level moves you on to the next, with words gradually speeding up. Your progress, best score and streak are saved on your device, and signing in keeps them synced everywhere.
Listen as you learn
Before each level you'll see a quick preview of the new words, and you can tap 🔊 to hear any of them spoken aloud. Hearing a word as you learn it — and again as you catch it — fixes both the meaning and the sound far better than reading alone.
That's it — you're ready. The best way to understand Speakka is to play a level. It's free, with no sign-up to start.
